Book Review: Bewitched by Laura Thalassa
I stumbled upon Bewitched thanks to a TikTok recommendation, which has basically become my go-to place for book recs!
After getting wrapped up in the Zodiac Academy series since June, I needed something that would feel fresh but still have that fantastical twist—and Laura Thalassa’s Bewitched hit the spot.
I wasn’t familiar with Thalassa’s work before this, but I’d heard she really knows how to work the tropes, and this book didn’t disappoint.
From enemies-to-lovers to betrayal, it’s packed with my absolute favourites. As a fan of the Zodiac Academy series, I thought nothing would top its take on enemies-to-lovers, but the chemistry here between Memnon (the mysterious and rugged main male character) and Selene (our fierce witch of an FMC) was next-level.
Memnon starts off as the classic gruff, stand-offish character, seeming almost cruel in his quest for revenge against Selene. But soon, glimpses of his gentler, more nurturing side peek through, only to twist the story once more when betrayal comes into play.
It’s a slow-paced story in terms of the timeframe, but never once did I feel bored. Just when I thought I’d caught onto a twist, Thalassa surprised me, over and over again.
Now, if you’re into “romantasy,” this book is seriously delivering.
I had to pause and just take in lines like,
“Even if I wanted to – even if I didn’t have two thousand years of revenge to exact on you – your life is bound to mine est amage. Not even death will part us. I will never let you go.”
That line! Thalassa really knows how to serve up those deep, dark romantic lines that keep you thinking about them long after.
Oh, and if you’re a fan of a possessive MMC, Memnon will not let you down. When a second love interest shows up (yep, there’s a love triangle), his response was perfect:
“Est amage, it is taking everything in me not to kill that wolf where he lies. You touch that boy, and he dies. Slowly. The same threat extends to anyone who thinks to pursue you, little witch. Do you understand?”
Swoon!!
In terms of world-building, Bewitched nails a balance between fantasy elements—witches, warlocks, werewolves—and a modern-day setting that’s easy to follow and never overwhelming.
If you’re craving a book with a unique modern twist on fantasy, one that’ll keep you guessing, swooning, and completely hooked, Bewitched is the one to pick up.
I can’t wait to start reading Bespelled, the second book in the series.
