Here’s the Ultimate Hospital Bag Checklist, because whether you’re like me and expecting your second child, or if this is your first time, you can never be too prepared!

With my first, Skye, I had my hospital bag packed by seven months. This time? I’m nine weeks out and only just getting started.

Life as a mom means juggling a lot, and sometimes that means leaving things to the last minute.

Let’s face it, packing a hospital bag isn’t just about throwing in some clothes and calling it good.

It’s about preparing for one of the most important days of your life—and making sure both you and baby are comfortable.

Here’s everything going into my hospital bag, for both me and baby, with handy links to products that can make your prep easier.

Hospital Bag Checklist For Mom

  1. Comfortable Clothes for After Delivery
Think loose-fitting pyjamas or a nursing nightgown. Button-down nursing pyjamas are great for easy access during breastfeeding.
  2. Maternity Underwear and Pads
Hospital underwear is…let’s just say functional. I’m bringing my own high-waisted postpartum underwear for comfort. Add some heavy-duty postpartum pads or adult diapers to the mix.
  3. Nursing Bra and Pads
A supportive nursing bra is a lifesaver, along with breast pads to deal with leaks.
  4. Toiletries
Mini bottles of shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, and deodorant are must-haves. A travel toiletry kit can save you from scrambling.
  5. Slippers and Socks
The hospital floor isn’t cosy. Bring grip socks or slippers to stay comfy. I’ll be in my trusty Crocs which haven’t left my feet throughout this entire pregnancy!
  6. Snacks
Labour can be long, and post-delivery hunger is real. Pack protein bars, dried fruit, and snack packs.
  7. Water Bottle with Straw
Hydration is key. A large water bottle with a straw makes it easier to sip from any angle.
  8. Phone Charger with Long Cord
You’ll want an extra long phone charger to reach the hospital plugs. Speaking of, make sure your phone is charged well ahead of time or pack a power bank if you can’t be bothered with cables and plugs.
  9. Going Home Outfit
Don’t forget to pack a comfy outfit for the trip home. Leggings and an oversized sweater or dress are great options.

Hospital Bag Checklist For Baby

  1. Onesies and Sleepers
Pack two or three in different sizes. Newborns grow quickly, and not all babies fit into newborn sizes right away! I learned this the hard way with Skye—I only packed newborn outfits but ended up needing one size up.
  2. Swaddle Blankets
Even if the hospital provides them, it’s nice to have your own. These soft muslin swaddles are perfect.
  3. Diapers and Cotton Wool
Not all hospitals provide these, so bring your own just in case.
  4. Going Home Outfit
Choose something cute and seasonally appropriate. Make sure to have at least two size options here as well, just in case baby doesn’t fit into your first choice.
  5. Car Seat
You can’t leave the hospital without it! Make sure it’s already installed in your car. Here’s a top-rated infant car seat.

Bonus Items

  • Pillow and Blanket
Hospital pillows can be thin. Having your own cosy pillow and blanket can help you rest.
  • Nipple Cream and Cooling Pads
Breastfeeding can be tough at first. These soothing gel pads and lanolin cream provide relief.
  • Birth Plan Copies
If you have one, bring a few printed copies for the staff.
  • Entertainment
Download your favourite movies or playlists ahead of time for downtime during labour (if you should be so lucky)
  • Bottles and Formula
Whether you plan to exclusively formula-feed or just want a backup option, having a couple of baby bottles and some ready-to-feed formula on hand is a good idea. Many hospitals provide formula, but it’s always nice to bring the brand you plan to use.

Why Prep Your Hospital Bag Early?

With my first, labour lasted over 19 hours. While I hope things go faster this time, it pays to be ready for anything. Packing your hospital bag in advance means one less thing to worry about when the big day comes.

So, if you’re nearing the end of your pregnancy and haven’t started on your hospital bag checklist, now’s the time. Trust me, you’ll feel so much more at ease knowing you’ve got everything covered.
