Breastfeeding Essentials: Exclusive or Combination Feeding

Here’s my tried-and-tested list of breastfeeding essentials, plus a few extras I’ve learned about since becoming a mom. Whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned pro, these items can make all the difference in your feeding journey.

Breastfeeding can be a beautiful experience, but let’s be real—it’s not always as easy as it looks in the brochures. With my firstborn, Skye, I exclusively breastfed for 9 months. While it was a rewarding journey, it came with its challenges. This time around, I’m planning to primarily breastfeed but also introduce a bottle sooner to give myself some flexibility (and maybe sneak in a nap or two).

1. Nipple Balm

This is non-negotiable in my book. Even if your baby latches perfectly, there’s still an adjustment period, and it can be uncomfortable (or downright painful). A good nipple balm can soothe sore nipples and keep them from cracking. Look for one that’s lanolin-free or organic if you’re into natural options.

2. Haakaa Manual Breast Pump

This little device is a lifesaver! While Skye fed on one side, I’d use the Haakaa on the other to catch any letdown and save it for later. It’s hands-free, easy to clean, and perfect for moms who aren’t quite ready for the commitment of an electric pump.

3. Nursing Pillow

A good nursing pillow supports both you and your baby during feeds, especially in the early days when you’re figuring out positioning. Your arms and shoulders will thank you for the extra support.

4. Comfortable Nursing Chair

While I didn’t use one all the time with Skye, I appreciated having a cosy, supportive chair for those marathon feeds. Bonus points if it has a footrest or side pockets for snacks, water, or your phone.

5. Muslin Cloths or Burp Cloths

Spit-up happens—a lot. Keep a stack of muslin cloths or burp cloths handy to wipe up messes. They’re also great for discreetly wiping away milk dribbles or using as an impromptu nursing cover.

6. Nipple Guards

For the early days when things might feel a little tender, nipple guards can be a game changer. I preferred washable options because they’re eco-friendly, but there are disposable ones if that’s more your style. There are even stainless steel cooling guards that help soothe sore nipples between feeds.

7. Electric Breast Pump

If you’re planning to build up a freezer stash or need milk for bottle feeds, an electric pump is a worthwhile investment. Double pumps can save you time and are especially helpful if you’re planning to return to work or need a consistent milk supply for others to help with feeds.

8. Sterilising Equipment

Even if you’re exclusively breastfeeding, sterilising equipment is essential if you’re introducing bottles. There are microwave steam bags, sterilising units, or even just the old-school boiling method to ensure your bottles and pump parts are safe and clean.

9. Nursing Bras and Clothing

You can never have too many nursing bras. Look for ones that are comfortable, offer good support, and make it easy to feed without fumbling. Nursing-friendly tops and dresses will also make life so much easier.

10. A Good Book or Show

Feeding sessions can last anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour, and sometimes you just need a little entertainment. Load up your Kindle, queue up your favourite Netflix series, or download some podcasts to make the time fly.

A Few Extras I’ve Found Helpful

  • Breast Pads: Whether you prefer disposable or reusable, these will save you from awkward milk stains when your supply adjusts.
  • A Large Water Bottle: Breastfeeding makes you so thirsty. Having a big water bottle with a straw is a game changer.
  • Snacks: Keep granola bars, trail mix, or other one-handed snacks nearby. Feeding a baby works up an appetite!
  • Nightlight: A dim, portable nightlight makes night time feeds less disruptive while still giving you enough light to see.

What’s on your must-have list? Whether you’re in the early days of figuring it all out or a seasoned mom with wisdom to share, I’d love to hear what worked for you! Drop a comment below and let’s help each other make this breastfeeding journey a little smoother. 💕
